Hmm, not sure how I feel about this one. Whilst ultimately this is not unlike any other website or social network that will launch a new page design for all profiles without a thought to the user, there has typically been something different about Facebook whereby they seem to respect the user a bit more.
Having been announced in the Facebook developers blog that this mandatory rollout would happen in the next week, it has got some bloggers riled. Take StartUpMeMe, a frequent microblogger and commentator is particularly peeved. Not that the opt-in option will be removed as the new layout becomes default, but that there is no opt-OUT option.
Basically, once you sign in to Facebook and give them your details, you cannot remove yourself from this 3rd party (social media) ad access system. Which raises questions as to the ethics of social media advertising – is it too intrusive? Have Facebook abuses/impeached(?) their position as almost open-source pioneers in freedom-of-networking and development? Your thoughts are welcome…
